Dragon Cat for Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition

What in the name of the Realms is this? A cat? And a dragon? Mixed together! Some mad mage must have a sense of humor, or an animal seller somehow lucked into a desirable (or not) mix of a small dragon and a house cat.

Imagine all the stubbornness of a cat mixed together with all of the stubbornness of a dragon. Then, put some wings on it, give it an earsplitting screech, and watch as it torments all the rodents, dogs, small children, and other small, living creatures who happen to come across it with its innate magical abilities and claws.

Just whatever you do, don’t make them angry. These little buggers can spit dragon breath relevant to their type. Tick off a red dragon cat and you’ll find your house burned down.

Of course, that doesn’t stop people from adopting the accursed, little things. If you’re a wealthy Waterdhavian and you don’t already have one, you’re probably on a waiting list to get one. And don’t be surprised to discover that the local mad mage or that hag haunting the forest down the road already has a collection of them.

Dragon Breath (Recharge 5-6). The dragon cat targets one creature that it can see within 5 feet of it with its dragon breath. The type of breath the dragon cat emits, as well as the required saving throw and damage, depends on the color of the dragon cat:

  • Black or Copper. The target must make a DC 11 Dexterity saving throw, taking 9 (2d8) acid damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
  • Blue or Bronze. The target must make a DC 11 Dexterity saving throw, taking 9 (2d8) lightning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
  • Brass, Gold, or Red. The target must make a DC 11 Dexterity saving throw, taking 9 (2d8) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
  • Green. The target must make a DC 11 Constitution saving throw, taking 9 (2d8) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
  • Silver or White. The target must make a DC 11 Constitution saving throw, taking 9 (2d8) cold damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

The dragon cat will be included as a Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition entry in a new book I’m working on for DMsguild.com titled, simply, CR 1/8.

It will be available for free download and reading until the book is published (probably by the end of this week).
