Eloise (Sentient Fiendish Longsword) for Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition

Eloise may be over 1,000 years old (or so she says), but she has the patience and attitude of a spoiled teenager. Passed around from one devil to another, Eloise doesn’t stay in the hands of others for long. Either they grow tired of her whining or they simply have no further need for her. Of course, this makes her sad. And when she’s sad she cries. Then gets angry. Then throws a fit. Then apologizes. And so on…

Weapon (longsword), rare (requires attunement)

You gain a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.

Curse. This sword is cursed and possessed by a fiend named Eloise. Becoming attuned to it extends the curse to you. As long as you remain cursed, you are unwilling to part with the sword, keeping it on your person at all times. While attuned to this weapon, you have disadvantage on attack rolls made with weapons other than this one.

In addition, while the sword is on your person, you must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw whenever you take damage in combat. On a failed save, you must attack the creature that damaged you until you drop to 0 hit points or it does, or until you can’t reach the creature to make a melee attack against it.

You can break the curse in the usual ways. Alternatively, casting banishment on the sword forces Eloise to leave it. The sword then becomes a +2 weapon with no other properties.

Small construct (+2 longsword of vengeance), neutral evil

Abilities Int 14 (+2), Wis 11 (+0), Cha 12 (+1)

Senses Eloise can hear and see normally out to 30 feet (blind beyond this radius), passive Perception 10

Languages Common, Infernal, telepathy (limited to any character that uses or wields her)

Special Purpose

Aligned. Eloise seeks to defeat or destroy those of good alignment.

Ideals. Eloise has the following ideals:

  • Slaughter. Eloise thirsts for blood on her steel, especially those of good alignments.
  • Logic. Despite her desire to kill and maim all those who oppose her, she still has enough sense to know when a situation is beyond her or her wielder’s capabilities.

Bond. Gift Lover. Eloise sees any gift, such as a new scabbard or cloth for cleaning, as a sentimental keepsake. She will favor whoever treats her right.

Flaw. Romantic. Eloise tends to fall in love with whoever wields her, especially if they treat her right. She will ignore her own special purpose (briefly) to please her owner.
