10 Times Dark Sun Characters Stopped What They Were Doing to Pose for a Brom Painting (and Flex Their Quads)

I figure if I’m going to make a Top 10 list every week, I might as well make one that cracks me up. If you’re a “new school” Dungeons & Dragons player, you might not get the joke with this particular list, but us grognards will probably smile.

Back during second edition, there was a campaign setting called Dark Sun. Basically, you played an adventurer on a shit hole world where magic was super spooky, metal was rare, and 9/10 you didn’t survive your first session (despite having higher than normal ability scores).

Anyways, a lot of the art for Dark Sun was painted by a guy named Gerald Brom. First, he’s an amazing painter. However, you’ll quickly notice that all of his paintings have sort of the same motif of well-muscled warriors (especially their legs) turning to the camera and posing… despite being in the middle of a dire situation.

Check it out (and yes, I realize a couple aren’t from Dark Sun, but they’re good none-the-less):

#1 – “Who cares about that orc about to attack? I gotta strike a pose.”

#2 – “That dude riding a dinosaur might be hunting me right now… but I still need to look good with my tiger.”

#3 – “Sure, I could help my buddies fight that big monster. But check out this thingie I got!”

dark-sun-4

#4 – “Skip leg day?! Do THESE look like the quads of someone who SKIPS LEG DAY?!”

#5 – “All right, everyone. There’s that painter. Look cool! Look cool, damn it!”

#6 – A common Dark Sun sight: a “quad-flex” showdown between two warring clan chiefs.

#7 – “I’d like to roll to intimidate… by flexing my quads.”

#8 – “What am I doing? Oh, just thinkin’ about stuff and things.”

#10 – And of course, there’s Neeva. You don’t joke about Neeva.

Do you love Brom’s art? Then share this!

In all seriousness, I love Brom’s art. It’s so freakin’ iconic that the moment you see one of his images you know it’s him. And when anyone tries to copy his style, you know they’re trying to copy him.

If you’d like to learn more about the art of Brom, check out the Art of Brom book on Amazon.

See you next time!

Art by Brom (duh).
